Q&A on Villa Avellana

In the world of luxury villas, there are plenty of hidden gems. But Villa Avellana stands out as that rare breed of next-level amenities appearing almost magically out of the natural jungle surroundings. For guests, that means an unexpectedly private beachfront estate along the Costa Rican coastline, but one that comes equipped with such all-inclusive, round-the-clock, don’t-lift-a-finger service that you really can call it ‘ultra luxury.’

First impressions?

“The staff met us on arrival with drinks, snacks, cold towels, the works. There are 24 people working there and they were all on hand to make sure we had everything we needed. The property is really tucked into the jungle, and the staff is able to tell you about the birds, monkeys, even the trees on the property.

And, of course, the kids noticed there were phone chargers in every room, music playing throughout the house, and multiple gaming stations and tv set-ups ready to go.”

How was the beach?

“The thing that surprised us was the black sand–it’s so soft and silky, but you can’t really get a good sense of it from photos. The water was really warm, and you could either play in the waves there or head to a calmer area down the beach. There was lots of sea life to explore, and if you feel like a change of scenery, there’s access to the Four Seasons resort nearby.

The other thing we noticed was how private the property was. You walk under the tree canopy to the water, and it’s like your own little world in the jungle.”

What about food and drink?

“The food was amazing, and the staff really catered to each person’s whims and tastes. Plus, we had a birthday in our group, so they set up a whole BBQ party on the beach, with lights and bonfires and delicious food.

We also had a very cool rum tasting: Mike, the owner owns a chocolate factory, so we tried each rum paired with a different chocolate. Then we each picked a favourite rum and the staff created custom signature cocktails for all the adults. Mine was fantastic!”

“The staff always found ways to surprise us…on the last day they presented us with gifts to take home. They gave me a tortilla-making machine because they overheard me saying that I wanted to make them at home.”

Other than all the gaming stations, how did the kids enjoy it?

“The kids loved it–each day, they had their own activities and entertainment, but it was coordinated with the adults so we weren’t having separate experiences. For instance, we all learned how to make tortillas together, and there was a magician for the kids during cocktail hour for the grown-ups. There was also fishing, crafts, jungle tours, face painting, water activities, cooking classes, just tons of stuff.

The place offers a lot of peace of mind. All the rooms are under one roof, so no one is sleeping in a separate building. There are lifeguards for the pool and beach, the staff is incredibly attentive and the kid services are really topnotch.”

Would you go back?

“We are going back! We’re already looking to book next year. There was so much to see and do, and it’s rare to have a private villa rental operate like an all-inclusive, with every meal, activity, boat rental, childcare and experience included in the nightly rate. It makes it easy to plan, so we can really focus on the trip itself.”
